DB2 Web Service Enabler Product Overview

DB2 Web Service Enabler (DB2WSE) is a program which runs on the IBM i (AS/400, iSeries, System i), which enables external applications not residing on the IBM i to access files on the IBM i. Said differently, DB2WSE enables true platform independent communication via XML between a business running on the IBM i and their business partners who do not. Think of DB2WSE as an XML replacement of JDBC/ODBC.

DB2 Web Service Enabler is an efficient way to access DB2 data residing on your IBM i without writing ANY RPG code on the IBM i.  The code needing to be written is instead on the client side (i.e. in .NET/Java/PHP/etc) where we offer a concise API set to get your client PC programmers up and running quickly.  The loosely coupled nature of DB2 Web Service Enabler is a great addition to any SOA-minded company looking to further their data-sharing initiatives while ensuring data gets securely into the right hands and programs.

There are virtually an un-ending amount of practical business examples that could leverage the exchange of data utilizing DB2WSE. Practical examples of data often needing to be shared between companies via XML web services include:

  • Purchase Orders
  • Invoices
  • Orders
  • Shipments
  • Inventory
  • Customer Data
  • Accounts Receivable Data
  • Accounts Payable Data
  • Credit Card Data
  • Product Data
  • Service Data
  • Warranty/Policy Data

Technically speaking...
DB2WSE can be called as a web service by external applications to perform a DB2WSE 'request'. A full request consists of XML which defines a SQL statement to execute (which can be a SELECT, UPDATE, DELETE or INSERT statement), a user name and password, and various options which specify the format of the response. A simple request consists of a URL in the REST format, which can be used to perform a SELECT statement only.

DB2WSE will process the request (including checking the existence of the user name, the validity of the password and the authority of the user to perform the specified operation on the specified file), perform the requested action on the file and return the requested information as XML.
